Revelation 19:7–8
The great climax of all ages is the marriage of the Lamb. The Bride of the Lamb is the Church, the Body of Christ. But notice, the Bride must make herself ready. Have you ever been in the preparation for a marriage where the bridegroom came and got the bride ready? Nowhere! The bride works hard at her dress, her hair, her fingernails—everything must be perfect. If ever there is a time when a young woman is busy, it is when she is getting ready for her marriage. Today the Church needs to be busy preparing for her marriage to the Lamb.
The fine linen that makes up the Bride’s wedding dress is the righteous acts of the saints. This is the outworked righteousness of the saints. All your life long you are spinning the fabric for your wedding garment. Every righteous act you make is another thread.
Lydia and I had a fellow missionary friend in Palestine who became ill and was told she was going to die. Being a believer, she was prepared to die. One night the Lord gave her a vivid dream. In her dream she was sewing a beautiful white garment and as she looked closely at it, she saw there was a great deal of the garment still missing. Through this dream the Lord showed her that she had not finished her life’s work. Ultimately, she did not die; the Lord raised her up to complete her work.
Many times I have pondered the message of that dream. All through our lives as Christians we are working on our wedding garments. The linen we are weaving into this garment is our outworked righteousness as saints. Considering this, I have often suspected that if some Christians do not change their manner of life, all they will have for a wedding garment is a miniskirt! Certainly not heaven’s appropriate fashion for weddings.
We understand, then, that God requires from us, as outworked righteousness of the Law, just one word: love. All the Law is fulfilled in that one word. This answers the question: What does God require of us? We now turn to the second question: How does God enable us to do what He requires? To address this question, we must understand how grace operates, which is the topic of the next chapter.
